FLAMINGOS IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING WORLD

SYMPOSIUM ATTENDANCE BURSARY  GUIDELINES

Please read these guidelines carefully. They contain important information relating to your application for funding and not following these guidelines may jeopardize your application.

,Please email your completed application form to fsgifs@gmail.com  by 1 August 2025.

When completing your application, please carefully note the following:

1. Who can apply?

Applications only accepted from symposium participants who have been accepted to

present their work. This includes oral and poster presentations, or delivering a workshop.

2. What we fund

  • Travel (rail or air).
  • Registration fee;
  • Shared-room accommodation with breakfast for up to 6 nights, or 7 if there is no other reasonable travel option.

If funding for any of these costs is available from other sources please note that in the application form. The lower the costs per person, the more people we will  be able to support.

If travel funds are granted the bursary recipient will need to work with the FSG to finalize the itinerary.

3. Submitting your application

Use the application form provided and submit this as a Word document (not PDF).

Complete the fields requested, save the document as:  IFS bursary application - insert your surname/family name here ; (e.g. IFS bursary

application – Garcia) and send by email to fsgifs@gmail.com  Applications are only accepted via email, and you should receive acknowledgement that your application has been received. All correspondence will be undertaken by email.

4. IFS Ethical Policy

The IUCN SSC FSG requires that all who engage in its activities, who publish papers in Flamingo or who benefit from its financial support also uphold professional standards. In particular:

a. Scientific integrity  Results should be reported honestly and openly, and data which does not support a

hypothesis should not be suppressed or ignored.

b. Due acknowledgement

All who contribute and all sources or references should be adequately acknowledged.  It is recognized that material derived from citizen science surveys, long term institutional studies or similar may make individual acknowledgement impractical, but the organization or group responsible should be acknowledged. Permission should be obtained to use data gathered by others where it has not already been made available for public access by the authors or compilers.

c. Legal compliance

All applicants for bursaries are required to act within the standards and procedures laid down by legislation in the country where the work is conducted. They must ensure they have the necessary licenses and permits for the activities described in the paper

or grant application.

d. Conflicts of interest

Any interest or relationship, financial or otherwise, that might be perceived as

influencing an applicant’s objectivity is considered a potential source of conflict of interest. These must be disclosed when directly relevant or indirectly related to the work that the authors describe in their manuscript or which is the subject matter of an application for funding.  All bursaries are awarded on condition that the recipients comply with these guidelines, and applicants should confirm that they have read and understood them.

5. Consideration of your application

Applications will be evaluated by members of the IFS Scientific Committee and/or external reviewers.  Applicants will be contacted by 15 August to inform them of the outcome of their application.

6. Being offered a bursary

Bursaries are offered subject to a presentation/other role being accepted.

  7. Acceptance and payment of a bursary award

On being awarded a bursary you will be asked to confirm acceptance of the award under the terms of these guidelines and any other conditions contained in the offer email by September 1.

Payment for travel, registration, accommodation and excursion (if desired) will be paid directly by the IFS organizers, not to the bursary recipient.

8. Publication of presentation in Flamingo

Acceptance of a bursary entails acceptance of the condition that the presentation will be submitted in manuscript form for publication in the IUCN SSC FSG publication Flamingo by1 February 2026. This condition can be waivered in special circumstances, please contact us before submitting your bursary application if you desire a waiver.  Failure to comply with this condition will render yourself, and any other person from your organization ineligible to apply for future funding from the IUCN  SSC FSG

9. Unsuccessful application

If your application has been unsuccessful, then you will receive notification of this by email.

Due to the number of applications, we are unable to provide feedback as to why any application is unsuccessful. No correspondence will be entered into with regard to an unsuccessful application.

We look forward to receiving your application.
